Congress Theatre, Eastbourne

Beethoven Overture, Leonore 3
Mozart Violin Concerto 5 in A, K219 (Turkish)
Dvorak Symphony 8

Simon Streatfeild conductor
Kolbjorn Holthe violin

'The crown of Dvorak's work' and 'one of the considerable achievemtns of symhonic literature' are both critical descriptions not of Dvorak's famous Ninth Symphony, but its immediate predecessor, the Eighth, with its infectious finale fashioned as a pot-pourri of Czech folk tunes. So insistent was Beethoven that his Overture to the opera Fidelio be admired for its perfection that he re-wrote it four times, eventually settling on this exquisitely crafted version, heard before Mozart's sublime fifth and final Violin Concerto.

FUNharmonics Family Concert Musical Menagerie

Stravinsky The Firebird Suite (excerpts)
Stephen McNeff The Tale of Peter Rabbit (from Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit and his Friends in the Orchestra)
Matthew Hindson Dangerous Creatures (world premiere)

David Angus conductor
Chris Jarvis presenter

Join us for a musical menagerie featuring animals big, small, cute and ferocious! Mr McGregor from Beatrix Potter’s Tale of Peter Rabbit certainly has an affection for ‘birds and fishes and beasties’– particularly when they’re served up on a plate! This enchanting musical version of the story by Stephen McNeff rubs shoulders with a rather more inedible feathered creature, Stravinsky’s spectacularly powerful Firebird. But beware of the prowling beasts that are waiting in the wings courtesy of Matthew Hindson, whose new work Dangerous Creatures is sure to scare, delight and enthral!

This concert will last for about an hour.

Dangerous Creatures has been commissioned by the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

TEEN SCREAM

London premiere of the frighteningly funny musical written and directed by The Heather Brothers; creators of the hit musicals 'A Slice of Saturday Night' and 'Lust'.

'...it’s a real SCREAM...' ‘High School Musical’ meets ‘Halloween’ in this exciting new musical comedy.

A group of high school kids rehearse their end-of-year musical in a derelict theatre on a tiny island in the middle of a river. Events take a sinister twist as real life starts to echo the play they’re rehearsing and a crazed killer strikes. The offbeat group of friends rally to unlock the killer’s identity and get caught up in the deadly results – solving this mystery is going to be murder. The bridge is out, the phone wires cut and the stage is set for what promises to be an exhilarating and terrifyingly funny musical comedy.

With it’s fantastic score, unequalled laugh-to-shriek ratio, plot twists a-plenty and blood, guts and special effects galore, the show parodies those ‘infamous’ teen horror movies of the nineties. A fun, fast, and frighteningly furious musical romp not to be missed.

TEEN SCREAM will be performed at the Kenneth More Theatre, Ilford, Essex from Wednesday 23rd - Saturday 26th July 2008 at 7.45pm and 3.00pm (sat only). For tickets and further information contact 0208 553 4466 or 01708 458262 or visit www.sotheatre.com.

TICKETS ARE ON SALE NOW FROM THE THEATRE BOX OFFICE ON 0208 553 4466 SO BOOK NOW TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT

Foyle Future Firsts
Schoenberg Three Pieces for Chamber Orchestra (1910)
Stravinksy Eight Instrumental Miniatures
Stravinsky Trois Poésies de la lyrique japonaise
Mahler Symphony 4

Clement Power conductor
Eri Nakamura soprano

This evening the Foyle Future Firsts, the Orchestra’s outstanding young apprentice musicians, come together to play music by three masters of the twentieth century. Handpicked from amongst the most talented music college graduates in the UK, these apprentice musicians join the Orchestra for a year of mentoring, performance experience and education work, culminating in the chance to perform together as a group in concert at Southbank Centre.

The Foyle Future Firsts scheme bridges the perilous gap between advanced musical training and regular paid work in the profession; a gap which often sees gifted musicians lost to non-musical careers. Since the scheme was launched in 2004, past Foyle Future Firsts have obtained both work and full-time positions with some of the UK’s leading professional orchestras.

The Foyle Future Firsts programme is generously funded by The Foyle Foundation with additional support from the Musicians Benevolent Fund.

Pray silence for the Great Bard… though this concert will be anything but quiet – with battles, weddings, jovial japes and dazzling dances a plenty. There’s warmongering from Walton, magic from Mendelssohn, pomp from Prokofiev, and bravado from Bernstein as we take you on an orchestral adventure through scenes from the great stage masterpieces of William Shakespeare. Travel ‘on location’ with us to Agincourt, Athens, Verona and New York with music written for films, musicals, ballets and the plays themselves. Is this a spectacle I see before me? It certainly is!

Prepare to be whisked from your Royal Festival Hall seat and taken on a magical journey, courtesy of a sleigh, a steam-train, nine flying horses and fifty elephants! Ever wondered how you could make your journey into London more planet-friendly? Honegger’s steam-train-inspired Pacific 231 might not lower your carbon emissions too much, but Prokofiev’s ‘sleigh- ride’ Troika could well do, Wagner’s flying Valkyrie horses are certain to, and the fifty elephants of Stravinsky’s extravagant spectacle Circus Polka might slow you down, but at least they’re exempt from the congestion charge!

Beethoven Overture, Egmont
Beethoven Piano Concerto 3
Brahms Symphony 1

Ralf Sochaczewsky conductor
Fingin Collins piano

Launching mid-sentence, pushing outwards, inwards, upwards and downwards, Brahms's First Symphony took a long time coming, and its opening bars herald the composer as one who was to address the symphony with distinctly original ideas. Yes, Beethoven's insistence and thrust is there, as is the clipped finesse of early Brahms, but the rigour, ardour and depth is all new. This is a work for which the London Philharmonic Orchestra has developed an acclaimed affinity in recent years.

Nicolai Overture, The Merry Wives of Windsor
Rachmaninov Piano Concerto 2
Tchaikovsky Symphony 5

Nicholas Milton conductor
Andrei Korobeinikov piano

Amidst the torture of the composer's emotional life, Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony seems at once a calming breeze and an energetic gale, as the composer throws dazzling shafts of bright optimism into his typically languorous orchestral shadows. No less Romantic, though perhaps less troubled was Sergei Rachmaninov of whose rapturous Second Piano Concerto the Marilyn Monroe character in the famous movie The Seven Year Itch said: 'Every time I hear it, I go to pieces. It shakes me, it quakes me. It makes me feel goosepimply all over. I don't know where I am or who I am or what I'm doing. Don't stop. Don't ever stop!'

Rossini Overture, William Tell
Rodrigo Concierto de Aranjuez
Tchaikovsky Symphony 4

Michal Dworzynski conductor
Milos Karadaglic guitar

Tchaikovsky wrote of his Fourth Symphony that it expressed 'an escape from reality'. And it's not just Tchaikovsky's emotionally engaging symphony that offers such an opportunity in this concert: the heavenly melodies of Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez will ease you into a beautiful dream, after the infectious gallop of Rossini's William Tell overture has whipped the rug of reality from under your feet.

Tchaikovsky Fantasy Overture, Romeo and Juliet
Chopin Piano Concerto 2
Prokofiev Ballet Suite, Romeo and Juliet

Stuart Stratford conductor
Adolfo Barabino piano

It's no surprise that Shakespeare's romantic play inspired creative works from Russia's best-loved composers. Framing the luxury and rapture of the Second Piano Concerto by Chopin are visions of Shakespeare's star-crossed lovers from Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev - visions that have become as synonymous with the characters they depict as they have with the musical ideals of Romanticism. Magical moments abound in scores filled with delightful orchestral effects and impassioned romance that will warm any autumnal Sunday!

Sunday 12 October 2008 | 3.00pm
Congress Theatre, Eastbourne

Bernstein Overture, Candide
Coplan Appalachian Spring
Gershwin Rhapsody in Blue
Barber Adagio for Strings
Bernstein West Side Story, Symphonic Dances

Carl Davis conductor
Louis Schwizgebel-Wang piano

Carl Davis launches our Eastbourne season with a cascade of stateside classics, opening with the swashbuckling overture to Bernstein's satirical musical Candide. Then come two utterly contrasting musical views of America: the spacious open landscape of Copland's depiction of a rustic wedding in the Appalachians, and Gershwin's bustling bluesy cityscape. Barber's moving Adagio precedes a rip-roaring finale, the rhythmically infectious symphonic dances from Bernstein's musical West Side Story. Join us as we launch the season with a bang!

Kaparte Promotion present:

Steven Severin ‘Music for Silents’
3 July 2008, London Bush Hall
Steven Severin, founder member of Siouxsie & The Banshees and acclaimed solo artist presents his new score to the 1928 surrealist classic "The Seashell & the Clergyman" plus a programme of scores to short films by emerging avant garde film makers AURA SATZ, BRUNO FORZANI and HELENE CATTET.

The Seashell & The Clergyman
Directed by Germaine Dulac, from an original scenario by Antonin Artaud, the film was premiered in Paris on 9 February 1928.
‘Arguably the first example of Surrealist cinema, this dark, erotically-charged film is an hallucinatory story of tormented desire, guilt and conflict. With daring imagery, startling effects and a sense of the absurd’.

This is Steven Severin first solo show and exclusive London date.

A Laugh at the Opera: A rib-tickling romp through everyone’s comic opera favourites, featuring hilarious hairdressers, subversive servants, duplicate lovers and amorous aristocracy!

Hatstand Opera say their shows are like the weather; if you don't like what they are singing now, wait five minutes and it will change! Most extracts are sung in English, including popular 'pot-boilers' and something really unusual for the buffs. No need for subtitles, when director and mezzo Kirsty Young introduces who singing what, when, and most importantly, why!

Based on Schnitzler’s 1900 play La Ronde, David Hare’s The Blue Room follows the sexual interactions of 10 unlikely couples.

When the play was first produced it was closed down by the police and the actors were fined for obscenity, it became infamous in Britain for Nicole Kidman’s raunchy nude scenes. Hare has re-set these circular scenes of love and betrayal in modern day Britain.

The University of Greenwich Drama Society hold nothing back as they recreate this passionate and controversial piece of theatre for their first production in Woolwich, at the Old Baths Theatre, London, SE18 6QX. For directions please see: http://w3.gre.ac.uk/drama/where.html

Tickets are free but available on a first come first serve basis with admission restricted to those aged 16+. Donations are also very welcome and gratefully received.

The show runs from 11th June 2008 at 14.30 and 19.30 to the 12th June 2008 at 19.30.

Cirque Surreal, Britain’s biggest and best contemporary circus, is coming to Dunorlan Park, Tunbridge Wells with an internationally acclaimed show. Voyagers is a groundbreaking two hour thrill ride featuring breathtaking aerial acts, astounding acrobatics, gravity defying balancing, incredible juggling and hilarious comedy in a fantastic celebration of physical and dramatic skill.

The perfect night out for all the family, Cirque Surreal boasts 25 world class artistes – from Bulgarian daredevil acrobats Nikolay and Konstadin, who leap 25 feet above, below and onto huge rotating wheels to the remarkable Lui Jai Jai and Miao Chiang Wei performing the legendary Oriental Swan – a remarkable fusion of ballet, physical strength and acrobatics. Many of the performers will be familiar to fans of the Sky One reality hit TV series Cirque de Celebrite, in which artistes from Cirque Surreal trained a group of star celebrities in circus skills.

In a celebration of the myriad cultures that have formed the cornerstone of circus as a performing art for centuries, the Cirque Surreal performance follows the modern fable of five voyagers drawn from four continents - Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas - as they seek to gain recognition in a global community. The fifth voyager – representing the millions of stateless people - simply wants to belong.

The Cirque Surreal experience will take place inside the Theatre Big Top which offers audiences a luxurious range of facilities including individual seating, state of the art theatrical lighting, fantastical stage sets, retail outlets, licensed bars, a range of food and snacks and the relaxing chill out zone.

Cirque Surreal was created in 1995 by the world’s leading circus creative partnership, Phillip and Carol Gandey, working to break down outdated traditions of the circus, to produce a new style of physical performance arts entertainment.

THE MURDER MONOLOGUES

Edinburgh Previews!

Show 1 - Friday 27th June @ 7.00pm with welcome drink and after show question and answer session with writers and actors

Show 2 - Saturday 28th June @ 7.30pm.

The show...

How does it feel to kill?

Who hasn’t thought about killing - someone, for just a second, some time? How would it feel to plunge in the knife, put your finger on the button, watch life seep away?

The Murder Monologues, staged for the first time at the Edinburgh Fringe this summer, takes the audience on a daring journey through both the enjoyment of killing and its horror. Written by John Foster and Sheila West, The Murder Monologues explores two very distinct kinds of murder through the eyes of the perpetrators.

Little Boy, by award-winning writer John Foster, Screenwriter-in-Residence at Bournemouth University’s prestigious Media School, explores the tragic, true-life story of Major Claude Eatherly of the US Air Force, part of the team that dropped the atomic bomb – known as ‘Little Boy’ - on Hiroshima. Unable to atone for his guilt, Eatherly resorted to robbing banks and forging cheques to raise money for Hiroshima’s orphans and war widows.

The disturbing Chocolate Cake, by talented writer Sheila West, takes a chilling tour through the mind of a psychopath on Death Row as he remembers the intense pleasure he felt at the murder of children. A character too obscene to sympathise with as he faces imminent execution, our expectations are nevertheless dealt a dramatic blow by the secrets he reveals.

A dark exploration of human nature, The Murder Monologues looks at the relationship between murder condemned and murder condoned, between responsibility and detachment, between blame and guilt, and between prison bars and the restraints of the mind.

The people of Merseyside will be treated to a real extravaganza over the next bank holiday weekend. On the 24th, 25th and 26th May, Walton Hall Park will see the return of the annual Liverpool Military Show, now in its 7th year.

The Show – supported by the Ministry of Defence as part of the Veterans Day celebrations in June, is an exciting showcase for all three branches of our armed forces with a truly exciting programme for the whole family. Among this year’s attractions are the army’s Red Devils Freefall Parachute Display Team, the Royal Signals White Helmets Motorcycle Display Team, the Pipes and Drums of the 1st Bn Irish Guards, the Band of the 4th Bn Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment (TA) and various combat displays.

This year will see a truly impressive battle demonstration coordinated by Merseyside TA units in this their 100th year as part of the TA100 celebrations. The display will begin with a bridge deployment by the 75 Engineer Regiment using the impressive Trojan which will then feature an infantry attack by the 4th Battalion the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment supported by the 5 GS Regiment Medical Regiment and artillery support following a gun run from the mighty 105mm guns of 103 Regiment Royal Artillery.

There will also be a number of static attractions including one of the Royal Armoured Corps Challenger II tanks, Scimitar light combat vehicle, Tank Simulator, Multi Launch Rocket System, Gazelle Helicopter, Titan Armoured vehicles and a number of Historic Military vehicles.

For the Children there will be an assault course, aerial rope slide, simulators, paintballing and face painting. To ensure there is something for everyone the show will also host a Continental Market with a large selection of foods, beers and crafts on offer.

Money raised from the Show will go to the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA Forces Help), which helps and supports those who serve in our Armed Forces, those who used to serve and their Families. . With 14 million service and ex-service men and women and their dependents eligible for support from UK charities, it is only through an event such as the Liverpool Military Show that worthwhile causes such as SSAFA Forces Help, are able to ensure that our brave men and women and their families are able to receive the help and support they need.

The Show runs from 10am to 4pm on all three days, with admission £5 on the gate for adults and £3 for children under 14. Cadets, scouts and guides in uniform as well as Veterans wearing their Veterans badges get in for free. A programme of events will also be available to help you plan your weekend and learn more about our armed services.

This will be a Bank Holiday to remember with everyone attending the Show leaving in the knowledge that we have incredibly skilled, efficient and modern armed forces with a worthy military heritage which is still the envy of the world. Coming to the Show will be a great way to show your support for all the men and women willing to step forward as our first and last line of defence in maintaining our security at home and abroad.

This is an open invitation to a screening of a series of short films called People of the Forest.

Filmmakers and investigators will be present to talk about the stories behind their documentaries.

Speakers include Gavin Searle (Director of BAFTA nominated BBC series Tribe), award-winners Handcrafted Films, and investigators from The Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA).

EIA is a small, pioneering London-based organisation which uses undercover and surveillance techniques to gather intelligence on environmental criminals across the world, often at great personal risk to investigators.

This evening encompasses some of our work with threatened forest communities, including the first ever films made by Papuan people about how illegal logging gangs are threatening their way of life.

A GIFT FROM THE BLUE

GERARD COUSINS TO PLAY A MUSICAL FIRST AT CARDIFF CITY HALL

Gerard Cousins, one of Wales’ leading classical guitarists, is to perform at ‘The Chambers’ in Cardiff City Hall at 7pm on Friday May 9th.
Gerard’s appearance will be the first public concert ever to be held at this stunning and prestigious venue.
Passionate and virtuosic, Gerard takes audiences on a journey of beautiful sound. He has played concerts around the world, but now Wales’ award winning guitarist is returning to the capital of his home country with a rare concert appearance to coincide with the launch of his second album A Gift.

A Gift gets its title from a piece written by composer and jazz musician Robert Jacob. Robert and Gerard had played together performing guitar arrangements of Miles Davis great jazz album 'A kind of Blue' before Robert's untimely death in 2005. Gerard later learned that Robert had been working on a new piece, which was posthumously entitled 'A Gift' by his family and given to Gerard for the first performance at a concert dedicated to Robert.

Brecon born guitarist Gerard, who is now based in London, has stepped away from the typical Spanish repertoire of the classical guitar which he explored with his first album Una Leyanda to feature music from Cuba, Japan and the UK on his second album as well as two pieces he has composed himself.

“I’m not your typical classical guitarist. The music I play is influenced by so many different styles that it's impossible to describe in a single word. There are jazz, eastern, religious, even progressive rock influences on my new CD. My aim when I perform is to bring the audience on an intimate journey with me, exploring all the different expressions and emotions that the guitar can produce.

The Japanese composer Yoshimatsu used to play in a Pink Floyd style rock band before becoming one of Japan's leading composers of concertos and symphonies and the Cuban composer Brouwer has a totally unique style mixing minimalism with his Afro-Cuban roots.
At City Hall Gerard will perform pieces from both albums including works by Joaquin Rodrigo, Leo Brouwer, Takashi Yoshimatsu and Sir John Taverner's only composition for guitar - his haunting Chant.

Tickets for the City Hall concert are £10 (including a free glass of wine) and are available from City Hall or www.wegottickets.com/event/29519
